Let's play a game!

It's called, Why Is That In My Purse? I will list all the things (besides the boring stuff) that are currently in my purse (read: mondo tote bag) and let you guess why they're there. Ready? Okay!

- Veronica Mars, Season 3 box set
- Two bags of (un-popped) microwave popcorn: one Kettle Corn and one Extra Butter
- Frozen cupcake from Magnolia Bakery (in New York City)
- Three packs of playing cards
- Bottle of rum (unopened)
- Two CDs: The Best of Gladys Knight and the Pips and Pickin' on The Beatles (bluegrass covers of classic Beatles' songs)
- From Eroica with Love, a manga by Yasuko Aoike, Volume 9

Here's the kicker: none of these things were in my bag yesterday. Anyone who can come up with a reasonable explanation will get a prize. Anyone who can come up with a ridiculous explanation gets two prizes. Happy speculating!

the bottle of rum is there because I was driving.

Fact.

Hmm ... reasonable explanation. Patently false, since I know better than to get in a car with you, but reasonable. You get an "A" for effort, and a "C" for execution.

Hmm, ok, you're meeting up with some friends and playing bridge with the cards, and the loser gets a frozen cupcake thrown at their head. After that you're all watching Veronica Mars and eating popcorn and playing a drinking game with the rum. The cds and the manga are things you just realized you need to make your commute on the dc metro tolerable. I'm more of a metro nap person myself.

Shockingly accurate. Are you having me followed?

Aww, nope, I guess we're just kindred spirits. Want to be my second in command in hell?

I will never serve you, Satan! NEVER!

... Although, if you have a competitive benefits package, we should talk.

nonono--if I Hadn't been driving home, I'd've drunk that damn rum. :-p

Aha. I thought you were implying that our group of friends actually gets sloshed on occasion (instead of sitting around all day playing bridge like old women). As the kids say, my bad.

While commuting to work one day, you realized the life of a policy fellow is an incomplete one and decided instead to bilk tourists for their money by running games of chance on the streets (hence, the cards). the Veronica Mars DVDs (excellent choice, btw) was there as a prize incentive for your victims to play your slight-of-hand games. The popcorn and the rum were part of a complex move designed to distract the players by offering them delicious snacks and beverages while you shift the cards around on the table. The CDs helped to set the mood of a free-wheeling, funky street card player, while the manga was intended to show depth and cross-cultural understanding. the magnolia bakery cupcake was there strictly for product placement, because let's face it - not even a street thief can get by in this economy without some corporate sponsorship.

I think you pretty much won the game - that's the best explanation I've heard so far :)
